Ideas for Simple Self Health Help

caduceus Let us begin a discussion and collection of ideas that everyone can implement into their daily lives for better health.

To start, REMEMBER TO BREATHE!  This may seem one of the most ridiculous statements considering the fact that the Respiratory System is under involuntary control mechanisms of the brain.  However, conscious control of breath initiates the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).  The ANS consists of two sides: the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems.  When we take the time to slow our breath and be conscious, we initiate the Parasympathetic Nervous System.  In turn, the Parasympathetic Nervous System initiates the rest and relaxation response, as well as: decreased heart and respiratory rate, muscles relax, blood vessels dilate and allow more oxygen to our cells, tissues repair, and digestion occurs.  All of this happens from taking a moment or two to remember to breathe and slow our lives down a little bit!

Next, DRINK LOTS OF WATER.  We are mostly water, and therefore, should drink lots of it.  Soda, coffee, beer, and juice do not count for water.  According to, 64 oz. per day is the minimum intake for adults to meet basic requirements of hydration, temperature control, digestion, and waste disposal.  Passing water is beneficial for our health.  The more water we drink, the more water we will pass, and therefore, dispose of toxins from our bodies.  More discussions to come on water...

EXERCISE!  If you do not use it, you lose it.  Muscles and bones love to be stressed even though we, as humans, do not necessarily.  Also, weight loss is simple.  If you consume more calories than you burn off in a day, your body will store the excess, and you gain weight.  If you burn more calories than you consume, you lose weight because your body will burn stored fats.  Now, the mental game behind getting motivated to exercise and being disciplined about your eating habits is subject for a whole other discussion.  Use your beautiful body before you lose it.

PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT YOU EAT!  Where is your food coming from?  Why are you eating?  These are two very important questions to ask yourself.  Knowing the source of our food is almost a forgotten idea, but very important and telling of the foods health, prana, or chi.  If all you know is that it came from McDonalds, be afraid.  If you know that you acquired food from a reputable farmer at a farmer's market, then you know you have food that is close to the earth.  This means that your food did not spend weeks, months, or years preserved on a shelf, or that it was zapped by a machine and krafted into something else.  Closer to the earth is better!  Next, asking yourself, "Do I need this?" when eating is crucial.  Too many eat for other reasons than to refuel and replenish our temples, our bodies.  If you can take a moment to reflect, you may find that you do not need to be eating.  Pay attention to your body.  Your body knows...more discussions on the body to come.

THINK GOOD THINGS!  This seems silly to many, and still to me sometimes.  However, it is proven that positive thought processes lead to positive outcomes.  So, like Tinkerbell tells Peter Pan, "Think happy thoughts."  (Note: this is not to say to repress or deny negative thoughts, feelings, or emotions, but to be aware of reoccurring thought patterns and make them happy ones)
